Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering Ranked No. 1 by ISI

ARLINGTON, Va., July 7, 2003 -- Articles in the Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering are cited more often than papers in any of its peer journals, according to ISI's 2002 Journal Citation Report.

ISI found 145 citations in 2002 to the 41 articles published in Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering in 2000 and 2001. From these numbers ISI assigned the journal an "impact factor" higher than any of the 40 biomedical engineering journals it tracks. ISI calculates its impact factor as a ratio of citations to recently published articles.

In the top 10 for biomedical engineering, Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering was followed in order by Biomaterials, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Physics in Medicine and Biology, IEEE Transactions on Rehabilitation Engineering, Journal of Biomechanics, Biorehology, and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering.

"I could not be more pleased," said Sam Gubins, president and editor in chief of Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering. "This is a truly impressive achievement for a journal which is just beginning to establish itself in the community of biomedical engineers."

Annual Review of Biomedical Engineering published its first volume in 1999. The Whitaker Foundation made a special grant in 1998 to help support the journal's start-up costs, advertising and promotion.

ISI is an information resource service for researchers, information specialists and administrators. Its Journal Citation Reports are subscription publications.
