Special Opportunity Awards Summary
The Special Opportunity Awards Program was
initiated in 1993 to complement the Development Awards by offering
smaller, more flexible grants to improve biomedical engineering
education.
Applicant institutions were required to commit considerable resources
to ensure that the programs begun under these grants became permanent.
The awards have been used to strengthen the quality or enhance
the scope of biomedical engineering programs and to establish new
formal educational programs in biomedical engineering.
The foundation has made more than 100 grants to 72 institutions
for a total investment in excess of $88 million.

than one Special Opportunity Award.
