The Whitaker Foundation will spend all of its assets and close in June, 2006. The foundation will continue to monitor progress under existing awards, but no new applications for funding are being accepted.

The foundation awarded grants under the following programs:

BME Research Grants
This program assisted U.S. and Canadian biomedical engineers in establishing their research careers. More than 1,500 grants have been awarded.

Graduate Fellowships
These grants helped graduate students prepare for research careers in biomedical engineering. About 400 students received support.

Industrial Internships
The foundation supported internship programs at 30 institutions nationwide that helped students prepare for careers in industry.

Leadership and Development
A series of major awards of up to $18 million were made to leading institutions for enhancing or establishing biomedical engineering programs. Twenty-six institutions received support.

Special Opportunity Awards
This program complemented the Leadership/Development initiative with smaller, more flexible grants for educational programs in biomedical engineering.

Teaching Materials
These awards support the development of quality teaching materials for undergraduate or early graduate study.

National Health Care Issues
The foundation had two programs to develop technology that would have a cost-saving potential for the delivery of health care. One program was administered jointly with the National Institutes of Health and the other jointly with the National Science Foundation.

Transitional Funding bridge the time between the end of the Whitaker Research Grant and the beginning of major support from another source.

NIH Summer Internships support undergraduate biomedical engineering students as they conducted research in NIH labs in Bethesda, Md.

Conference Awards support conferences and meetings that enhance biomedical engineering.
